Kathy and Verdel, thank you so much for posting, we will indeed light a candle for Chase, Simon, Daniel and Jordan. We are so deeply sorry for the loss of your best friend and friends to suicide. Truly, Verdel, our hearts go out to you. Please keep hanging in there and talking to Kathy and others about how you feel. She has my email address if you would like it, write any time or leave messages here. I am getting my book in the mail to Kathy for you tomorrow, it should reach you in a few days. Please take good care of your self and know that others care very much how you are. We extend our deepest, deepest sympathy to you, keep following your dreams, and as we are for Mic, keep walking in the world for your friends and finding true happiness. Our hearts go out to you, wishing you peace, comfort and strength, love and hope, Joni

Thought for the day..."It is in the quiet crucible of your personal private sufferings that your noblest dreams are born and God’s greatest gifts are given in compensation for what you’ve been through." quote by Wintley Phipps. Wishing all who read this peace, strength and comfort.

My first book to recommend for 2012 is
Transcending Illness Through the Power of Belief by Adolfo Quezada
www.iuniverse.com
Review by Joni Woelfel
Transcending Illness Through the Power of Belief is a wise, poignant gem of a guide book, written to companion those who are chronically ill, suffering or terminally ill. Some of the chapter titles include Transcending our Illness, Remembering our Holiness, Accepting our Pain, Awakening Our Faith, Evoking Our Power of Belief, Trusting Our Healer and Giving Purpose to Our Illness.
Forty-five pages long, like a re-assuring letter from God, this slim book is readable, deep and clear, just the right length for keeping by one’s bedside. Encouraging from beginning to end, Quezada includes diverse stories by people close to him who share feelings from the heart about their own spiritual journey with suffering. No sugar coating here, the book is inspirational yet grounded in reality. Quezada explains that it is important to remember that we are not our pain. “This does not mean that we should try to ignore the pain or deny it,” he says, suggesting that we can “move with it rather than against it, attend to it rather than disregard it.”
One of his most significant premises in the book is that while we have been conditioned to resist pain (fight it), if we are to deal effectively with it, acceptance and allowing pain to be a teacher helps us turn prayerfully inward where we find solace and peace. In an especially beautiful passage he writes that while we may not be privy to the whole cosmic picture, “A prayerful heart is open to whatever comes and is hopeful that all things, including illness, can work toward the ultimate good.”
The essence of this work is really about understanding the call and meaning of wholeness and realizing that healing begins in the soul. As Quezada reminds us, “Illness is not the end of the journey; life still awaits our response.” Anyone who is seeking support, insight and caring words to hold on to will find it in this thoughtful book.

My favorite book of the year that I read in 2011 is Final Gifts, Understanding the special awareness, needs and communications of the dying, by Maggie Callanan and Patricia Kelley. Quite simply, this book blew me away, everyone on the planet should read it. Recommended as a treasure by Sandol Stoddard, author of The Hospice Movement. Both the authors are hospice nurses and write from experience of having been there. An amazing, hopeful, practical, helpful book.
