Hey, I was just interested in Siberia for some unrelated reason, and stumbled across your writings while staying home nursing a cold. I gotta say, it was very interesting, you are quite a good writer. Some more personal details would have been welcome but still, fascinating read. I myself have never been to Russia, being a Hungarian (currently living in the US) we tend to dislike them for historical reasons, but it surprised me to discover some marked similarities in our "national character" based on your impressions. Keep up the good work.

I came across Chita on a map an wanted to find out more; firstly from Wikipedia and then from your website. I have spent a wonderful few nights reading about your experiences and thank you for the time and effort that you put into it.

I can’t help but wonder if there is another instalment in the James Brooks adventure?

Thank you.

All that time we were there in Chita--I didn’t know you were preparing to write a book! Good job, man. Turned out nice...I remember the trip to see Sveta in her village. I was cold for hours even after we got back into town.

I’m a french-canadian, going into Siberia for a year in september. Your website was more useful for preparing this trip than any others guidebooks! Thank you very much!

Enjoyed your account of life in Russia very much. Well written. Our common acquaintance is Michael Shipley

Hi James,

Fabulous account of life in Russia. I’m at Durham University, and I’m studying Theology, with some Russian on the side. I see you claim to be (at least part) from Durham - what is your connection?

Anyway, I’m making my first tentative steps East this Summer, doing the tourist thing of Moscow and Saint-Petersburg, but hopefully getting down to Kiev and Yalta in the Ukraine too.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi James,

Loved reading your website - I’ve been to Chita several times and made some great friends there. Last time I was in town was for a wedding of some great friends in April 2006 - met a girl there who was one of your students. She quizzed me on England. Everything I said was met with the reply ’but James Brooks says...’ Glad to discovered the website of the obviously esteemed teacher!

I miss those big blue skies... I’m sure i’ll get out to Chita again one day. Tom Morgan

Brilliant account of your life in Russia. I am 19 and was greatly encouraged by what you were saying. I’ve been around Europe a few times already, however i’ve had the time or money to go further east. I would love to replicate what you did in Chita.

I hope you go back some day.

Sam.

Well, I can see I get a few visitors from time to time but I’d love to know a little about them, so I’ve spent at least two minutes activating a free Guestbook page that could be well dodgy for all I know.

Anyway, please feel free to leave any comments here!

James
