Some of the mainstream churches of Christ are becoming as dishonest in their pursual and treatment of members who try to leave as the ICC does. Our teen was pursued by adults in our former church with and without my knowledge for over a year; kids were instructed to place guilt trips on her for leaving even though it was our family decision.

all we had been doing was going to another congregation because of growing discomfort at the old one and some of the things that were being done there.

They refused to interact with the adults in our family with their so called concerns, but relentlessly pursued our minor child. Ugly rumors began to surface out of other congregations, in an attempt to discourage other congregations from having anything to do with us.

Apparently We offended THEM.

If we all claim christianity, we should also know that condemning others is condemning onesself. To have a true view, study the Bible yourself and reach your own personal convictions and conclusions. Let the Spirit guide you, and you will be amazed at where God will lead you. I was at first 100% against the doctrinal belief of salvation through baptism, but as I further studied it out, I realized it was not only commanded by God, but also was in accordance with Scriptural teaching. I have been a member of ICOC for over a year, and many of things posted aren’t exactly what the church preaches.

Also, I wanted to comment on Laura’s response that this article is inaccurate on ICOC...I would disagree. Although I don’t think it’s fair to categorize ALL members of the ICOC w/the thoughts from this site...what the author wrote is pretty accurate based on my experience and 8 yrs in the church. I was taught all of the things the author wrote and taught others the same at some point or another. I was told the ICOC church was the "Kingdom" and taught that all others are NOT true christians therefore are not going to heaven. This arrogance that I had and ultimately still saw in the church is what led me away. I am grateful though b/c I have found myself in a place where I am walking even more closely with the Lord and I am beginning to understand freedom in Christ much more. I take full responsibility for false things I taught and arrogant attitudes I had while a member of ICOC...I also must acknowledge that I was taught many truthful things! I am grateful for all that were apart of my life while apart of the ICOC. Many I still consider dear friends and family. Sadly, I have little communication w/most, but again, I don’t fault anyone but myself. relationships are a 2 way street. I am certainly rambling now, but my intention in this post was to challenge your comment that the article is inaccurate...anyone who is truly being honest w/him/herself will find many truths in this piece....

Thank you for sharing this for all to read. I was apart of ICOC for almost 8 yrs. A couple yrs ago I began questioning teachings of the ICOC and what I was in turn teaching others and believing myself. This led to much prayer and study of the Word. It is my conviction that overtime I became alienated from the Cross of Christ...just like many in the church of Galatia as Paul pointed out who were teaching that circumcision was necessary for salvation...quite simply I spent ALL my time focusing on baptism and making this the essential focus of someones conversion instead of simply preaching Jesus and the Cross...this is truly the Good News the apostles preached! Jesus is All and in All...I earnestly prayed and STRUGGLED w/the necessity of baptism for salvation...it always seemed so clear when I studied the Bible w/others, but I began to open my mind and heart and BEGGED God to show me the TRUTH in it’s ENTIRETY...God’s simple message to me was..."Read the book of Hebrews"...I encourage all to do so...my eyes began to open and I saw things as never before! The message is truly and only about Jesus...He was the atoning sacrafice...once for all...The entire message of the Bible is about faith in Jesus...try it...read the book of John..book of Galatians, Ephesians, etc read them all and really notice ...what do you see more, the word FAITH, or BAPTISM?? I conclude that you will see Faith! Does that mean those believing baptism is essential are wrong and doomed to hell? No more than I now have come to know that those who don’t believe it’s essential are doomed. I was taught and led to think that ONLY those baptized for salvation are truly saved..what do I say to that now? The message of the Bible as I read in it’s entirety is simply faith and belief in Jesus...this is what I read more than anything. Of course I believe baptism is important, but I am no longer clinging to baptism as the only means to salvation...I am clinging to Jesus who says, "I am the way the truth the life" over and over Jesus says that the only way to Him is through belief and faith in Him. Nowhere in the entire gospel of John does Jesus speak of baptism FOR the means of salvation. yes, it is a command to be baptized, just as it’s a command to obey, but I now believe the means of savation is one that occurs in the spiritual realm..one I cannot see nor predict nor mandate through studies and actions-it’s a change in the heart through the Spirit and visible only to God!..God is in control and my role is to preach Christ, the Cross he bore and repentance, belief and faith. I no longer want to fixiate on baptism, but instead lift up the Cross of Christ for all to trust and believe on Him. It’s hard for me to believe now that baptism is the way to salvation since Christ did not teach this...his primary message throughout the entire gospels is FAITH in HIM!!! Also, I find it of interest that Paul, the one whom God selected to lead gentiles to salvation says,"for Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the Good News.." 1 Cor. 1;17 The Good News is not be baptized for salvation...the Good News is Jesus died for the forgiveness of sins! Once for all! Believe in Him...Have faith in Him..Live for Him!! This should lead one’s heart to desire baptism...this baptism should represent the putting off of your old life and the raising to a new one. Please let’s not get distracted any longer w/foolish arguments..let us truly be of one mind and heart and preach the Good News in all it’s wonderful and amazing simplicity..."I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. they will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death to life." John 5;24

Biblical baptism is a command from Jesus in Matthew 28;18 - Go make disciples, BAPTIZING them .......... I think we, who claim Christ should heed to what he says. Biblical baptism is participating in the death and resurrection of Christ and the means of identification with Christ - no Christ, no way to God.

Your articles about the ICC are really inaccurate.

I disagree with the view that Baptism is not essentail for salvation. If interested in a dialogue I could discuss the matter with you. I am not a member of the Boston group, as you have said ICC.
