Seth we did close the survey and are now in the process of analyzing the data. We got a lot of great responses, and some good ideas for future projects and Championships. In the madness leading up to the contest last week, we put the survey data on the back burner. I’m sure we’ll be getting back to that project as the current school year winds down.

If you have specific questions, you can email me at .

Ron - I checked with our video guy, and he has a fresh copy of your DVD performance for you. All you have to do is e-mail me your contact info. That goes for anyone who is having trouble with the audio tracks on their DVDs. I’m sorry for the inconvenience! We were burning them to the DVDs and handing them out so quickly that a few may have slipped through the cracks. Thanks for your patience!

A while back a questionnaire was sent out to NABBA members via email I believe. Have the results of that survey been tabulated and are the results published anywhere ?

Thanks in advance

Ron- I’m sorry to hear that! We haven’t heard from any other bands that had problems with their DVDs. I will send your question to the proper person and see if we can get your DVD replaced.

Please email me at and tell me which band you were in--Chicago? Cincinnati? ;)

Thanks.

The DVD that the CBB received does not have any sound. I tried it on three different players. Anybody else have that issue?

I am sorry that I neglected to mention below how much I appreciated the photographic coverage from Betsy Jones and Tom Day, as well as NABBA’s decision to provide a free DVD of each of our performances; that was a nice touch to add to the weekend. And, of course, many congratulations to all the other participating bands!

All weekend long at NABBA 2011 we were inundated with requests for feedback. Here goes. What I have to share is not representative of anyone but myself.

I don’t think I have been anywhere for a competition that was more friendly, more receptive and more helpful that in Grand Rapids. I stayed at the Amway, heeding the pleads of our illustrious Treasurer and found it an ideal location in every way . . . except perhaps for the expense which would certainly be cost prohibitive for a good many. It was a big city price for a hotel but at least I found it delivered with convenience and quality at every turn.

Every step along the way our questions were answered quickly and efficiently by Jim Grate. It seems curious to me that Jim (as Treasurer) is NABBA’s representative as webmaster, contest details, registration, percussion provider, communicator of schedules, Uncle Tom Cobbly and all. He seems to wear so many hats, and represents NABBA more like an Executive Director. Thank you for all your work Jim.

This year, I think NABBA just about got everything right. There were rehearsal spaces for those who wished to use them, the solo/ensemble competition was efficiently organized during the daytime (with some initial communication confusion in rehearsals the previous evening). The solo rooms weren’t perfect (they hardly ever are) but the hotel did at least have the space to accommodate the different sections in close proximity to each other; a great bonus for those of us hopping from one room to another.

The hall for the Saturday competition worked well. It was a very nice environment as an audience member. The flow back stage as a performer was well thought out, with warm up space, equipment needs handled, and Frank North once again handling all last minute details in the most professional manner. He continues, in my opinion, to be one of the most consistently professional people that NABBA has, always unfussed, always calm and collected and keeping things moving. Thank you Frank! The general sentiment seemed that the hall was enjoyed by bands for performance and the equipment needs were also well met. Award ceremonies that moved forward quickly and efficiently seemed to meet everyone’s needs.

I haven’t listened to all the judge’s commentaries yet, but there’s some relief that we have them this year. I do still question the placement of the judges. Shouldn’t they be 1) distinctly separated and 2) in a position within the hall that has the best acoustics and 3) not crowded around by audience members? All these things were possible at DeVos. It was nice to have a blend of newer and experienced judges (and a percussion judge!) I’ll keep separate my own thoughts about the judging in general since that doesn’t seem appropriate for this forum.

I still believe that penalizing bands for not providing volunteer staff is an indecent thing. It’s akin to keeping the entire class in detention because of one child’s misbehaviour. That said, all the volunteers did a terrific job and their situation and assignments were handled efficiently and without fuss. Thank you, volunteers. Let’s hope no-one gets penalized in the future; that would be an unpleasant mess to clear up. Perhaps NABBA could consider charging bands more as a contest fee, and then reimbursing those bands who do provide volunteers. It’s more paperwork, but at least it is a plausible alternative.

I believe that the plan is for the competition to return to Grand Rapids in three years time. Let’s hope we have more participation, because the facility is there for an excellent competition.

The correct results are on the NABBA web site

What’s the snafu with the scores?

When will the scores be posted?
