I was sorry to hear from Jaynie that Jay Phebus died in 2003. I was glad to hear though--that he became the state brand registrar--quite a step up for him. I remember Jay well, he was a quiet, kind patient person--the only time I saw him lose his composure was when I was helping him move from outside Hollister to Hollister and when we picked up the refrigerator, the motor fell out. He was also a hard, steady worker, and conscientious--qualities that I’m sure were a plus in his work as a brand inspector.

To Mr. Wolcott; Thank you so much for your kind words about my father, Jay Phebus. He did, indeed, become a state brand inspector, and retired in 1990 as the Brand Registrar for the state of California. Sadly we lost my dad in Dec. 2003. He never forgot his roots, and enjoyed returning to Hollister to visit his old friends as often as he could. My brother Gary and I are looking forward to returning to Hollister to see the beautiful restoration of our Great-grandparents family home, The Garcia House. Thank you to everyone involved in the project.

I was interested to see two people named Phebus in the notes. I worked for a couple of summers with Jay Phebus, who was a nice, copetent guy, and I am wondering if they are related to him. I believe Jay later became a brand inspector.

we need to identity as many of the people in the film life in hollister as we can. so if you call yourself a historian and love history start naming the people.

Greetings from Cairo, Egypt.
My great grandmother was Louise Gobar Perry, better known as Nana for those of you who knew her. Many of her things were donated to the historical society in 1998 when she passed away.
My grandfather was Lloyd Perry who worked at the police station for years.
My grandmother, Dolores Perry, still resides there on South street where she has for more than 60 years in the same house built when it was surrounded by orchards.
Now, I live in Cairo, Egypt, North Africa but San Benito is still in my blood. |
