I was interested to see Thistleton mentioned in this excellent history. My g-g-grandfather lived at Thistleton, namely, Halfway House, which was situated a little away from the cottages and (maybe) toward the bottom of present day Lorraine Street. His name was James Sheppard and he farmed at Halfway House + was a gardener at Jalland House. Do you have any info on Halfway House? Kind regards - Sue H

Your site has been invaluable to me as my 2xgreat uncle was Josiah Dawson from Manchester who went to be a policeman in Hull and according to the 1911 census lived with his wife Ellen at No. 15 May Tree Avenue, Garden Valley. He apparently saved two people from drowning in the docks at Hull and apprehended at least two criminals for which he was commended. I am keen to learn more about his life in Hull and where he and his wife are buried as they were 40 yrs. old in 1911 and we do not think they had any children.

Please pass greetings to the Rev William Mather, and ask if he has heard about the compilation of the Sheffield Morning Telegraph Who Was Who.

Re the section on flooding. I firmly believe you need to tell the story of what actually happened i.e. That no major damage was done to any houses only two to my knowedge water actually got inside. The fact that the water had all drained away by about 8-00am the next morning is not shown. That is why I gave you some photos from the following morning. The main reason the village got flooded was because of poor drainage. Think the artical doesn’t help anyone trying to sell their house in the area.

The content on your site is fantastic and very well researched. I am currently looking for some information myself on the history of Reckitt’s Recreation Area and wondered if you could point me in the right direction. It is for use on www.ra-ra.co.uk which is the website for the recently formed Reckitts Area Residents Association.

I read with great interest the section on Holderness House. Boswell George Jalland married Bertha Augusta Bröchner, whose mother was a Milberg, a relative of mine. I’m researching this branch of the family, so any other information on this branch of the Jalland s would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!
