Columbus Field will remain as it currently is but there are several reasons why Antigonish needs a new track. First and foremost, the Columbus Field track is less than 400 meters. In order to have sanctioned track events, the track must be a true 400 meters or the races and times will not be recognized.
Secondly, the Columbus Field track is in a flood plain. Every year, floods strip it of it’s top-coat and leaves it in sub-par condition. Years ago, the track was in tip top shape because an oil drum was used to oil it to keep the top-coat in place. Now, due to environmental regulations, this is not allowed.

What’s going to happen to Columbus field? Why can’t that track be used anymore?

Tenders will be issued and every effort will be made to hire local contractors.

Will local contractors be building the fields?

In order to comply with the regulations of the anticipated money received from the Federal and Provincial Governments, this project "must" be completed by March 2011.

When is all this supposed to be built?

The current Minor Football and Minor Soccer programs along with the high school and junior high school programs currently require 108 hours of field time each week. This doesn’t provide the current natural turf field any time for maintenance, rest or growth.

Why do we need a second artificial turf field in our community? Isn’t it enough that STFX spend all that money on their new field? Can’t the community make use of that...especially during the summer?
