51. SCSMC Comment - 2010-03-04 20:56:10 |
In answer to Laura Craik’s comments; many of Camden’s residents campaigned alongside the Stables market traders, right up to the deadline at the last planning application hurdle, desperately searching for legal reasons to prevent development continuing any further. But, as Laura so rightly suggests, Camden’s councillors not only didn’t listen to the (very loud) voice of the people, I suggest they had their own reasons for not doing so.

"...London’s markets are unique; they contribute hugely to the character of the city, and should be preserved at all costs, instead of being desecrated by the greed of city councils. It is small traders who give an area the very character that makes big traders want to be a part of it; why else would All Saints also have opened branches in “creative” areas like Spitalfields and Camden High Street?
Even though I live nearby, I feel far less sentimental about Camden Market than I do about Portobello. But that’s probably because Camden Market is a lost cause; a quirky cultural mish-mash turned into a giant lavatory, polluted by the twin blights of drug dealers and a council that thought it would be a good idea to replace Stables Market with a monstrous glass and steel structure that has as much character as a Big Mac.
Maybe Camden’s residents didn’t protest strongly enough; more likely, Camden council didn’t listen.
I hope the Save Portobello Market campaign has more success. As one elderly resident posted most eloquently; “When I’m dead, I hope that my ghost will still be able to walk down here and find the same wonderful things, and speak to the same wonderful people, that I did in the 60 years I came here when I was alive”. People make a city, not profit. " |

Tragically, his fun over, Bebo will walk away having desecrated an historic & unique architectural site - and ruined countless people’s lives with his greed.
Btw, he similarly f***** up a development in Belgium, & sold out to the Chinese - there’s a surprise!
I’ve heard traders say it can only get better when he goes, but I don’t see how, as new owners will surely want a return on their money & surely won’t be willing to restore the Stables to a market, rather than the Asian shopping mall it presently resembles.
I’d love to hear different ...? |

For all you people off thinking of coming and setting up a business don’t.
I have decided to vent my anger with today’s business at the stables market here .
Yet another miserable weekend, full of time wasters and tourist, the sad thing is that the tourist are the biggest customer and they are as tight as a duck’s arse but with all local money not coming to the market any more(As the master of the stables has pushed them all away by filling it full of crap) this is the best we are going to get. But wait I say there is more with everything going on in the news this week (if you haven’t being following let me tell you, with in the coming year the euro could go to 2 to the pound, great for us bad for them) my main customer base might all but disappear. Not to worry I hear everybody say the people of London will come for the day, all they need to do is jump on to the tube and and oh dear there is a flaw in that plan from the summer there will be no tube. I have had it up to my ears with all these s*it and I hope the rumours are true that the master of the stables (bebo) is going to sell up as he is in trouble with the bank.
A Very anger and tried trader (now planning to calling it a day after many years)

Northern Line Closures to rock Camden Lock
While its terrrible news for communters and businesses up and down the Northern Line, Camden looks like the hardest hit on weekend closures.
Think of the impact on Camden Lock market. While many think its too big, the loss of trade and jobs would be a killer, not to mention the impact on council rates.
Reacting to the news that PPP firm Tubelines plan to close Northern Line services on weekends for 20 month period, as reported in Tuesday’s evening standard;
www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23801527-outrage-at-plans-to-shut-northern-line-for-82-weekends.do
Nash Ali, Labour’s leader here in the borough, said; "The borough of Camden, from Tottenham Ct Road up to Hampstead and Kentish Town, will be disproportionately hit on weekends. It may have a massive impact on the Lock market, one of London’s largest tourist attractions and a source of local jobs and trade."

| Oh my god. I’ve been living with my head in the sand for the last week and complete missed the news about the northern line closing for 18 months. Could things get any worst not only have I’ve been hit with rent increase after rent increase all of last year and then one of the worst December’s and January’s, now this and that not all on top of it I’ve heard talk that “BEBO WANT’S TO INCREASE THE RENT AGIAN” to make up for the number of people leaving the market. Will someone please stop the mad man before it’s too late? |

An article what i came across when i was reading A swedish newspaper Talking about Fashion and life in london
London Tips; greenwich market on Saturday, Brick Lane on Sunday, Portobello Road on a sunny afternoon, with all its side streets and back streets and Camden Market That has a China town-feeling for sightseeing, you must eat food from their snack bar inside the market. To Camden, I can also go to the club Proud in the evening with good music and a dance floor with stage and dancers!
This is what people are saying in sweden and the neighbouring countrys. THAT CAMDEN MARKET IS FOR SIGHTSEEING AND LOOKS LIKE A CHINA TOWN, thanks camden for helping my business with fab story like this |
