It was sad to hear of Tony’s passing, in the end so unexpectedly sudden. We arrived at HKU within a year of each other, so our friendship was not of short duration. I would rib him on the performance of the hockey team, and who was responsible for so many goals against, he would often have his revenge when the performance of the Irish rugby team hit the headlines.
He was an opinionated, and generous man, and over a glass, or three, of claret in the SCR we often solved problems that seemed to perplex the rest of humanity. In recent years when I took a parvenue’s interest in colonial history he would come up with informative and helpful insights. On more serious issues, like how the history of the SCR should be written, I fear his ideas are now past realisation.
I already miss him. Unfortunately I probably will not be around for the memorial service, let me just add an old Irish cliche,
his likes will will not see again. |

Hello San, Susie rang me the other day, and told me your sad news, and gave me your email address.
It wasn’t very nice to hear what happened to Tony and you must have had a very traumatic time and must be still trying to come to terms with your new situation, and the memories.......
I can’t think of anything to say to console you about Tony, the devastation must be awful, I hate to think of myself in the same situation. Over the years I have thought about Susie and yourself often, and always send you love and best wishes for all things - so love again, Lyn.

Dear San-San,
I was terribly sorry to hear the sad new about Tony. It was only in May that I was talking to him about literature and jazz (as we often did). He was recalling his childhood and we were both extolling the merits of Dylan Thomas’s poem “Fern Hill”. Although I only really got to know him in recent years, I always looked forward to talking to him. He had read so much and had such a lot of wisdom to impart. He was also good fun to be with. I recall fondly the night he sang in the 1950s club in HK and the time he came round for lunch and we played various jazz artists we both liked. Even though we only collaborated on one academic article, he taught me much in the process of revision about what true scholarship is about. Hong Kong is lucky to have had such a dedicated historian of education who dealt with the topic so comprehensively and illuminatingly. He was, as you know better than all of us, a great guy. I shall miss him. You and your family are in our thoughts. Please accept our deepest condolences. I shall see you at St. John’s.
With deepest sympathy,
Peter, Gabriela & Richard Kennedy |

We were quite surprised and stricken when we heard of Tony passing away. It is very sad. He put up a good fight with his cancer and had some very very good times since it started. He also was amazingly strong and confident through all the treatments, harsh though they were. Having you with him was a major support, I am sure.
I will actually be in HK in the next few weeks, but I don’t know my schedule. It may be that I will have the most time later in October. In any case, I will be in touch and let you know; hopefully there will be time to see you.
Again, you have our sympathies. I wish I could be there because I think Peter is playing a role and he is so good in selecting good memories to hold up for all to gaze on. I’ll miss Tony severely.
Tom

| Dear San San, I have never met you or Tony but feel very connected through Tony’s writings on the Eurasians of Hong Kong, of which first drafts I was privileged to read. Very sad to know he is not with us anymore. I was very much looking forward to this latest work of his and supporting its development. However, hearing of his life, family, and the largesse of his character and contribution to the world, I am much inspired. And grateful for his example. May we all be so blessed. With very warm wishes to you and your family, Veronica Needa |

My beloved San San,
I will fly back for you and Tony, I am so sorry for not knowing that he has already left us.... I wanted to see him before he leaves this all behind... I am so sorry I missed it. Believe me my thoughts are with him.
San, as you know, both you and Tony are my guiding light, internal strength, unconditional supporters and mentors in my working life!
Through the both of you I saw your unconditional commitment to others. Tony, a supreme professor from Oxford, helped me with so many Chisese students in HK.
He never looked down on me as an illiterate dancer and throughout these past years has helped me so much in getting back my academic perspective in the real world. Supported me through thick and thin in getting my academic degree and knowledge in life. He was so patient, spent so many precious hours with me in your home.....read through so many of my terrible essays, even though he was so busy in HKU he never made me feel I was wasting his time.
Remember I came to see you every week at your Pokfulem home?I wanted to be coached by him personally when there was no one out there who believed in me and he was so kind to me and gave me unconditional courage to persevere in life.
I Love you both for ever and ever!

Dearest Sansan;
Your message has just reached me and I am really grief stricken. It came as a complete shock as he has seemed so well when I have last seen him.Thank you for letting me know and for giving such a moving account of his last hours,I sympathise as they are very much the same as when John passed away nearly ten years ago.I know how much you will miss him but gradually life does begin to pick up again somehow - it is never the same life but it does become more meaningful in time.
This comes with all my loving thoughts From Anne
