My Great Great Grandfather was William Standen from Wootten Courtenay near Minehead in Somerset who married Elizabeth Hurford.

As a winner of the Dutch Come Dancing (old style) i and my dance partner, and some 10 other couples, get as i remember well a 10 days holyday at the Butlins, we had a dance competition against English couples, where given old time dancing instructing and explored the region with a touring car. We had a great time and where given an example of your great hospitality. I remember Mr. and misses Orange as our host and Collin as our guide. My wife and i are planning to visit your region in the next year or the year after that.  |

| Fabulous website. Gave me real insight to where my ancestors lived and worked. I am an American, now living in Yorkshire, but my great-grandfather was from Minehead. Apparently, the family were farm labourers on Hindon Farm and my GGF emigrated to the States in 1884 at age 16. Family name is Standen, related to other surnames Court, Hurford, Cowlin, and Gregory. Any additional information would be wonderful. Going to the archives in Taunton in one month’s time. |
