What a great website! I’m a history fan and glad to know that my town has such wonderful caretakers for local history. Although I’m only a junior in high school, I am an Anerican history enthusiast and found your website extremely interesting and informative! Hope to join as a member soon. Thanks so much.

Dear Historical Society;

Thank you for keeping up on the cemeteries and other record keeping. I am from California, but born in Porvidence with many Waterman ancestors that lived in Johnston until about a 100 years ago. We have already made reservations to visit over the Memorial Day weekend and am not able to meet with you for the historical society meeting on Wednesday, but would like to join, support the society and meet one or more of your leadership on a day that we are in Providence on either May 23rd, 24th or 27th.

Thank you for your kind consideration of getting to meet one of you.

Sincerely,

Rick Mills

I toured the Clemens Irons house about 17 years ago, and realized then that Johnston, unassuming to the passer-thru and resident alike, has quite a bit of history to be discovered. I have a love of local history, and I would be very interested in attending a society meeting. I did not see an address for the barn where the montly meetings are held. Please let me know the address as I read that the meetings are open to the public. Thanks!

Great site, just keeps getting better. Recently I have found an article, printed in the RI Roots publication Volume 32, No. 4 dated December 2006 where it lists the names of households during the period of 1774. The list of names includes those of slaves and indians.

I’m particularly interested in following up with your society to see if you have any information on a name I found in this census list. The name is Dimeras Lewis, she apparently is living alone on this census. Do you have any information on this person? Thank you.

Hi all; This website is great, as most historical societies, such as ours in Coventry, is without one. Looks like your group is extremely active, possibly more so than ours (as we have a fund-raising event every month). Would like to hear more about your cemetery clean-up project/operation as we are trying to get one going in Coventry. In fact, we just discovered an undocumented cemetery through a local resident!!! Please advise accordingly. Thank you!

I am so happy to have found your organization. I’ve recently moved here from the West Coast (Washington State) and am eagerly looking for some family history answers. My great-grandfather, Israel B. Harris attended the Winsor School (1866) and organized a reunion in 1905. I have a great deal of information about the Harris family history dating back to 1631 and would love to make contact with anyone who would know more about my family....specifically places where they lived, burial grounds,etc.....thanks!! Michelle

I was born and lived most of my life in Johnston, I am now a resident of Greenville, but Johnston will always be considered where I grew up. I lived on Morgan Ave. across from Crandalls dairy, I have great memories as a child growing up there. Its great to see someone keeping its history well preserved. Thanks.
