Hey Yup. Just found myself on your site. I used to be a member in the late 70s to mid 80s till I joined Rochdale Tri Club, still with them now, Ran with Cooperman, Chris Bolshaw, Doug Hazell, wayne, Sir Harry Kelly et-al, great times. Is that THE Jill Lilley nee Messer writing from NZ, the one whose wedding I went to? Hope you’re still married, I have to thank you and the girls for getting me into track running, served me well as I turned out a decent triathlete.Still see ECH runners at events keeping up the good work. Have a great 2012 season. Thanks to all the coachs from my time for you help. Never too late to say THANK YOU! |

Just been digging through some old photos and found this;
No idea what we’d just won - but I suspect it was won in around 1988!
I only remember a couple of names now; (all from the back row)
Brian Townley (left, grey jacket) - was a European 60m and 200m veterans indoor champion.
I’m next to him.
4th from left is Dave Knight, 6th from left is a guy called Vinny, but don’t recall his surname.
Just found myself wondering what happened to everyone. |

Hey everyone at the club. I been thinking back to when i used to train as a kid and remembered the days when Mr B coached us. Its been ages since we lost touch with him and I was wondering if anyone at the club had a contact for him? Would be awesome if you could let me know.
Thankie |

Hi.
Great to see the clubs website and so many names and memories from my past. Barry McDiamid, Harry Kelly, Les Derbyshire, but most of all Jack Dobson. My coach for many years.
I’m now living in NZ, but still in contact with some of my peers - Helen Cooke nee Waterhouse, Julie Messer nee Batty and of course Dobbie (Jack). I wish all the best to former, present and future members of ECH.

I just can’t imagine what all of you with such wonderful memories have seen within the club over the many years you have been or were involved. I have only just been with the club 10 years and The changes i have seen are pretty massive, there definately has been a boom in the younger athletes, when i started at 8 years old there was only about 20-30 members who were under the age of 18, now there’s loads the club must have had barely 200 athletes when i joined and is now topping 500!!!! |

One last blast form the past - it is nearly 1 am here!
The brutal Christmas/Boxing Day hockey games where the athletes thought their athletic abilities would prevail, over hockey GIRLS! Only to be terrorised by the flaying brutality of the hockey girls and their sticks...
The athletes hiding behind the veil of fear of injury!
It WAS brutal... and sometimes bloody
I vote it is reinstated!

Came across the site while having a late drink and researching "My Dad" Gerry Haynes
Looking at the history section it is intersting to look at it from my then "youthful" perspective
I remember the tin baths at the clubhouse sandwiched between the railwayline and what is now Tameside Tech (I think)a time of black and white hoop vests before the gold and green type.
These were the days of Bill Fellows a figurehead of the club + Ivan ( I worked with him on summer jobs, Johnny (he of the big chest and big heart + VW Campervan, Tom (my godfather and the guy who could do the best "daisy-cutter" in the pre-Saturday run football warm-up, Jack ( who stewardship ensured the club kept on a good financial footing) Jim - who was good fun and his wife was "Glad all-over" Walter - full of fun + many others
These were formative year for me - good ones and testing times for the club as it moveed to Richmond Street and the new track with Tameside - battles with the Sports Council because we dared to propose a bar for thirtsy athletes!!
I owe this note to my Dad, Gerry Haynes - my view is that he and his mates had fun with ECH but also laid the foundations for the prgressive club is now...just in case they are lost in the midst of times.. I think but could be wrong he was "El Presidente" at the time was opened - proud moment fro him and all the ECH team
Dad is gone as is Tom, Walter, not sure about Jim but is mate Jack is and Ivan continues on unbowed in South Wales...brilliant - if you want a good ECH store find Ivan.
As for me I write this to you from Ann Arbor Michigan USA at 24-35hrs EST
Not sure how in formative or reflective this is but people like Martin McGann and John Pajack will reasonate with this as they "enjoyed" the committees with the "Old School" and the even "Older School"
All the best to ECH may it continue to be successful
