Ms. Bender. I’m sorry, but after reading your book, I was left feeling rather annoyed. Nearing the end of the book, it sort of felt like you didn’t know what to do with Rose so you decided to latch on this extra outlandish side story about Joseph. I apologize if that sounded rude, it’s just that his story didn’t seem very relevant to me in making the book good. I was satisfied just knowing about Rose and her struggles and triumphs, and that she had a dark older brother, but I guess I never felt like I wanted to know more about him.

hey aimee,
so glad i got to hear you read today. its always a pleasure to see you, and hear the book read as you wrote it.
it always makes my hands a little sweaty when i see you and you remember me. its funny, i’ve seen you read many times, but i always get that feeling. i just think your writing is so great, and your stories so original, how could i not be nervous meeting you! you’re definitely my favorite author. (well, you and george orwell, which is funny, because the writing styles/subjects are nothing alike!)
lemon cake, i think, is your best work. all of your writing has always been good, and has always left me when ... the only way i can describe it is heightened emotions. but while i was reading lemon cake i was in a haze the entire time (which was only a few days, but still). i used to love writing when i was younger, but i became a musician as time when on. reading you, though, gives me that feeling of wanting to describe everything as though i’m writing it. ever do that in your head? just describe whats happening to yourself as though its a book? it made me just want to gaze at my girlfriend, all gross and lovey; or study all the markings on our cats fur, gently rub his belly when he laid on his back, then describe the feeling of his soft fur, and gentle purr. i think really it just made me notice things more, made me want to appreciate my own emotions? i don’t go. i’m getting so deep here!

...and this became terribly long!

i look forward to the next time i see you read, and as usual, i’ll be waiting with baited breath for the next publication. (and reading!) maybe next time i see you, i will have found out what its like on the inside of fairyland. i’ll keep you posted!

thanks again!

"Lemon cake" lingers and begs a sequel.

Hi, Aimee;

Wow. Lemoncake. I devoured it, then returned to savor it. Beautiful, unique. Your phrasing, your associations, even your punctuation. I feel Rose and Joseph and their dad deeply. I am amazed and grateful. Thank you.

Take care and write more for me, please,
Thea

Aimee, I’m a fellow novelist, and I just want to thank you for crafting the best book I’ve read all year. As Rose might say, if your short stories have been the best appetizers ever, this novel is a meal at a five star restaurant. Hope our paths cross one day.

My favorite passage page 266 , "...but what if whatever Joseph had felt every day had no shape like that? Had no way to be avoided or modified? Was constant?" Thanks for writing this passage.

Hello Aimee,

Thanks for visiting SF last week, it was so nice to meet you. I tried to describe a photo to you and don’t think it came across very clear so here is the photo; eameshack.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

It reminded me so much of Lemon Cake when I happened to pass by it the day before I heard your reading.
Thanks for all you write, you are awesome.
-Elena
