Thanks for sharing your life experiences...for someone like me (age 33) I never really understood the context of the Vietnam Veteran beyond what I’ve seen in movies. My mom told me about how people would be belligerent to returning service men...how sad, regardless of politics. I’ve got to be honest, I’ve never liked hippies because of that!
I got to see the traveling Vietnam War Memorial wall this past summer as it went through my hometown. Even though the display was temporary, you could literally feel the weight of its significance in eyes of the people visiting and reading the names...the effect on the town lasted for days after it left.
Thanks again, for your service then and your words now.

39. Casualty of a Vietnam Vet - 2008-09-21 02:29:39 |
I married an older gentleman, who was a Vietnam Vet. Unfortunately, for me, he never left Vietnam in the late 60’s. He still considers it the time of his life with the Vietnamese women, drugs, etc. His mind is still there and I have a teenage son to raise alone. I was very proud of him for years, until I realized that mentally he never left there. He has drank much too much for years. That was the time of his life and we were too much responsibility. I am sure that many other Vets remained there mentally and physical bodies came home. |

Thanks for telling the story the way it really was. I was in Bien Hoa, Pleiku, Phu Bai and Can Tho from 4/69 till 9/70. In base camp mostly but volunteeered for extra duty. All I had to deal with was incoming mortars and rockets mostly. Easy compared to field duty. But for the love of God-that was probably the best time of my life! I’d do it again! |
