Glad to find this website. Researching George DUNBAR, Professor of Greek, Edin. Uni. 1805-1851. Think he has connections with Ayton Castle, might have worked there and been encouraged in his early studies by the owner.

Appreciate the valued info. Found a family marriage record (James Golightly of Eyemouth to Mary Dunse of Ayton Parish)that said the couple was regularly proclaimed on 13 September 1821 but that they had actually been "clandestinely married on 10 March last at the Union Bridge". Wish I knew what that story was all about!

My great great grandfather George Black, his wife and family lived at Ayton - Prenderguest(1841 & 1851 census) and Ayton Law Farm (1861.) Three sons (Alexander, Adam and George) came to Australia in search of their fortune, and found it in the form of a gold mine at Gympie, Queensland, and afterwards on a sugar cane property near what is now known as the Gold Coast in south east Queensland. Adam was the prominent one, served as a member of the Queensland parliament for a short time, and built a mansion which he called Ayton. Unfortunately (for me) the fortune was used up in the unsuccesful search for gold in another mining enterprise.

Hi, As a child in the 50’s and early 60’s I spent my holidays at a lovely old house between Ayton and Eyemouth. I believe it was called Flint Hill. Does anyone recognise this. I would love more information.
Thankyou
Valerie

Hi, I was interested to find your page page regarding Ayton.
My grandfather was born at Gunsgreen Hill
He was killed in France 1910.He is named on a commemerative plaque in Gateshead. My grandfater had three sons, my own father and two brothers. One of the brothers later became first team goalkeeper for Wolverhampton Wanderers perhaps the
the best team in england at the time.
