Ken Johnson

Leemour Pelli actually this person does not know the meaning of the word "friend," as he has created his own lexicon to suit his needs. He is only accustomed to using people to get what he wants, and ironically he will never get it - the fame and success that he wants. . . because he is nowhere near worthy of it nor a true artist. . .

Listen to all this hatred and name calling above. My name is Mark Kostabi. I used to be afraid to name names too, but now I am not. Maybe partially because I lost another friend to the grim reaper and I’m very emotional.
Leemour Pelli, who ...was first referring to me above as "this person" and has now stated my name, was my ex-girlfriend, after being one of Dennis’s. I met her in Dennis’s elevator. Why are you attacking me? What mean thing did I ever do to you? Why don’t you repeat all the nasty things you told me about Dennis when we were going out? Shall I get into details?
Ken; The point of my facebook posts was to point out why your newspaper, "the paper of record," The New York Times, ingnored Dennis’s passing. I can understand why Dennis’s ex-girlfriend Roberta Smith wouldn’t feel comfortable writing something, but why not you? Or Martha? or Karen? Or Holland for God’s sake!? -- The one Times critic that Dennis’s friend Thomas McEvilleys said was worth reading.
Most of us artists spend our whole life trying to create something good or beautiful or meaningful. Then one of you critics walks into a gallery, but only if it’s part of the circuit (meaning they advertise in newspapers and magazines) and half the time write something negative, in effect destroying what the artist was creating. This to satisfy the quota for negative news which someone said sells. As David Gibson accurately intuited above, I was only trying to express the truth. I never had much of an opinion emotionally about Jerry and Roberta, but whan their names came up at one of our lunches, I was struck by his passionate opinion about them and his fearless manner in expressing it. I was just passing on the news. Dennis never asked me to keep his opinion a secret. I was just passing on the news, which the New York Times, your "paper of record," chose not to do in this case.

David Gibson Whenever a major figure passes there is always conflict around the wake of his death. Look at any important figure from history. I am not comparing D.O. to Christ but just look at what happened. The apostles all scrambled and some disavowed him. I applaud Mark’s willingness to speak for someone he admired, and to speak Dennis’ words for him.

@Ken Johnson. I love you too. And I’m glad there will be a Times obit. I hope it’s a good, long one, although there’s no excuse for it being so late. Why would I lie? I have credibilty about my relationship with Dennis. Ask Amy. Ask Pamela... Willoughby. Ask Martin Liu. Ask Thomas McEvilley. Ask any one of Dennis’s true close friends. We are all buddies. Dennis was on my TV show several times. He was at all my parties. We showed at the same galleries. There are tons of photos of us together published in public. I was his Italian translator for TV interviews. There are many records of our business transactions. We were buddies. Amy told me I was his favorite person.
I was actually kind of a Jerry Saltz fan when I brought up Jerry’s name at lunch one afternoon at Mezzogiorno in SoHo, even though Jerry had always reviewed me negatively publicly. Always on TV. Jerry always wanted to be on TV. Ask Paul Tschinkel. I was the first person to get Jerry on national TV. On West 57th. Jerry was the snide critic who said nasty things about me on a special about me. Despite that, I still admired some (some, not all) of the things Jerry wrote and complimented him on those. Dennis Oppenheim was not so kind. When I mentioned Jerry’s name at lunch, Dennis got very passionate about how much he disresepected Jerry and Roberta and he underlined that; "Every serious person in the art world thinks Jerry Saltz is a joke." I actually felt like a fool for taking Jerry seriously hearing these words coming from one of the absolute greatest artists of th 20th and even 21st Century. Now, after seeing Jerry’s recent Glenn Beck-like and censoring behavior on Facebook, I agree with Dennis Oppenheim.See More

Mike Cockrill This is an amazing art fight -- but I don’t think it is worthy of those involved. There may be a little too much righteousness going on. On the one hand I did wonder why it took so long for the Times to get around to D.O’s obit (Did I miss it?) -- and I do know Mark really cared about Dennis. But Damn. This is getting unnecessarily ugly. And I think Ken has a good point too. Take a breath, kids!

Hi Mark,
It has been years since you spoke at California State University, Fresno, California and Gloria Juan introduced us.
I’m now on the Art Commission for the City of Oceanside, California. I’m still doing art and presently working on a
piece of abstract sculpture. Gloria has been in Georgia and called me and asked me if you were still out there. I knew you were and just dropped in on your website to check out the new stuff. Take care and be good.
Love from So. California, got sand, surf and paint, later~~~~~

Dear Mark,
We have actually met a couple of times. Once in San Francisco at a showing and another time in Europe.
Wanted to, briefly share an experience I had today with regard to one of the paintings I have of yours, "The Kiss."
A real estate agent told me that I should remove the art because some potential buyers would find it offensive. I explained that you were one of the most famous American artist alive today and your art hung in some of the best galleries and museums around the world. I then told her to fuck-off and leave my home.
Kind regards,
An art lover

Hello,
I am estonian student, who is making a presentation about you Mr. Kostabi. Before I ask some questions, I would like to say, that I have a bad grammar, so I hope you will understand. First of all, how would you describe your artistic production?
Secondly, maybe a little displeasing question, but who makes the sketches, is it you Mr. Kostabi or your employees? Thirdly, what are your priorities - art, money, helping people, fame, Kimberly? Finaly, the last on, it is intresting to know, what do you mean under "Kimberly" is it a real life person, who you like or there is a even deeper meaning?
Best wishes,
Lauri. |
