The Herd

Relaxed but ever watchful,
They silently go about their business.
Somewhere in the distance,
A twig snaps.
In an instant, they are running
from an unseen threat.

They are wind on the plains,
Powerful as thunder in a black-as-night sky--
Born to run.

They run until they feel safe
Like a child into a mother’s arms.
Moments ago,they were terrified.

Now they are safe.
They feel it in their flesh--
Peaceful, secure.

Thunder becomes the soft caress
Of a spring rain shower
And all is well.
