Robert Kirby did the string/horn/choir arrangements for my first Atlantic Records album when I was living in London in the 70’s. Robert had the gift of ’totally’ understanding exactly what feel and sound I wanted on my songs. Plus that fact he was a great human being. We had a great and fun time doing the album.
I met with him again this past March ’09 in London. We went out for a curry dinner and had a great chat. He agreed to doing the strings a new acoustic guitar album that I was going to come over to London and record in March 2010. He was a great music arranger, and as I said, above that, a great human being. He will be missed.

I first met Robert in 2003 at Tanworth-in-Arden and while we were having a drink in The Bell I suggested that perhaps if Nick Drake hadn’t become so disappointed and affected by the lack of success of Five Leaves Left, like a number of Nick’s contemporaries his following albums might have gradually picked up more sales, having the knock-on effect of generating more sales for his earlier albums. Robert’s response was, “But then we wouldn’t have had Pink Moon”.
To me it showed the humility of the man, that he seemed to rate most highly the only album of Nick’s he didn’t contribute to. For me, Robert’s arrangements were the perfect compliment to Nick’s songs, and this serendipitous match was made most evident when we were finally able to hear the difference Robert’s original arrangements made to Made To Love Magic and Time Of No Reply.
I mentioned to Robert that he’d also arranged one of my all time favourite songs, The Ferryman by Ralph McTell from his album You, Well Meaning Brought Me Here and Robert said how much he’d enjoyed arranging and conducting the three songs on that album.
He also said to me at the time that he didn’t think Nick’s home recordings should ever be officially released. He thought perhaps they should be available to hear in a library like some of the early American traditional recordings, as a historical record, but that was all. This viewpoint might partly explain his reluctance to allow the recordings of Nick’s Cambridge concert to be officially released.
Robert told me in 2004 he had always liked Nick’s song Blossom and my version of the song had been a good choice. I had asked him if he would be interested in doing some arrangements for my next album and he had given me his phone number. Unfortunately, my own health issues delayed progress on that venture and now we will never know what might have been.
When I think back to meeting Robert I see a smiling, affable, approachable man who gave so much to the world.

To Robert may your musical achievements never be forgotten and may you live on through your musical arrangements and in the hearts of those who have loved you and had the pleasure to have known you.
To Robert’s family and friends, we are truly saddened to hear of your loss, our thoughts are with you at this difficult time. |

I, like many have felt that they know Robert through Nick’s music, and have come to respect him like they respect Nick, for both his unique talent and his great character. I unfortunately never spoke to him personally but saw him at the first gathering and remember a happy, friendly man who everyone spoke very highly of who met him.
My thoughts go to Roberts friends and family at this very sad time.

| I only met him once but he was a great friend to Nick and so nice to so many people. A great talent in composing. The music world has lost yet another genius and a man with love for what he did. Life has to be lived with passion. Living it through music is one of the greatest way to do it. Blessed be. Denise |
