I was doing some research on mule pack artillery when I ran across your site. It is great, and I am enjoying it immensely. I did not see any action in WWII, but did serve in the pack artillery. I was inducted in the army on 6/22/45 and sent to Fort Bragg, NC for my basic training. None of us had any inkling that the War would be over in two months. At Bragg I trained in the artilery (survey and fire direction). After basic, I was sent to Fort Riley, Kansas, and assigned to the 611th FA Battalion (Pack). The next morning I was surprised to find that I was a mule driver. Of course the War was over by then, but we trained on with the mules. About May of 1946, the 611th was transferred to Camp Carson, CO (yes it was Camp Carson then). We had mountainous terrain there which was more suitable for mule pack. Labor Day 1946 we strung wire up Pike’s Peak for the annual Pike’s Peak auto race. I was discharged at Camp Carson on December 5, 1946, two days before my 20th birthday. I was a Sgt (T4). Thanks again for the memories. Philip Boss.

My father, Harry Merrill Follette, served in the 601st. Thank you so much for this website honoring the "greatest generation". My father spoke little about his WWII experience and as a small child I would ask him if he ever shot anyone. He would jokingly reply "I don’t know! I would just shoot and run and I was the fastest runner in the whole darn Army!" He was an amazing man. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1983 at 59 years of age.

My grandfather, William Russo, was a member of the 601st during WWII. I decided to look for a website for the 601st the other day when I was with him. We both loved the site, and spent quite a while looking at the photos of him and his old buddies. We’re all extremely proud of him for serving his country during the war, especially with such a distinguished group of men. Thank you for putting this site together.

Hi,
Thanks for putting together a terrific site with so many great photos. I know my father, Robert McDermott was in the Battle of the Bulge but I know little else about his time in WWII except for a few letters he wrote to his brother, Roger McDermott who was also in the Army. They joined the Army together in 1942.
Will keep up with the site to see if new information comes along.
Thanks again.

Hello - I am the son of CPL Wells Lewis Littlefield. 601st field artillery pack. Not sure what battery. He served in Attu, Kiska, Sicily, Italy, France, Germany, and Austria. His departure dates for the Pacific Theater; 29 Jul 43, 17 Nov 43, European Theater; 27 Feb 44, 15 Oct 45. He was a radio operator and Mkm Rife M 17 and BAR.
I am writing because I know very little about his tours of duty. He would not speak about it. All I know is it changed him forever. I knew of none of his buddies or if he had any contact once state side. My wife has found her fathers history and is in contact with guys who he served with. I am interested in doing the same thing. Her dad will be 93 in a month. WOW. My dad passed at the age of 57. If any one out there knew of him or served with him, I would love to talk with you. Thanks for the space.

my good friend, Carl Linz, was a memeber of A battery. He was in the the same unit during his 3 years in the service, from the pacific invasion to germany. When the war ended he became one of the "MPs". As of this writing, he is alive and well in Whiting NJ.

Hi,
My dad was Dick Hughes SSgt. of 601st. He didn’t like to talk about the bad times but loved talking about all the great men he called friends. Your site has allowed me to see both sides and I really appreciate your hard work.
I was at the reunion held in Denison,IA. at Wes Fremel’s back in the early 90’s and had the distinct privelage of meeting some of our heros.
Thank you for putting together and maintaining this site.
Tim Hughes

Was doing research on Camp Hale, Colorado and came across this "GREAT" web site. FANTASTIC Photographs! Feel as if I were there 60+ years ago. A great tribute to the men who served and trained there. Job Well Done! I will keep checking back from time to time to see what else you add. Thank You for taking the time to create it. David
