You are right Lloyd. We need a new President and Board Members. It’s to bad that Kirk L gave up with the LMN. He is a True Labradorian and he believes in his abroginal rights. I hope Kirk runs for President someday.

I was speaking to a past president Kirby L just a week or so ago. He told me the story of when he went to visit a Metis leader you might know - Violet Brown. He told me she had on her wall a great quote and the first time he actually saw it. It was a quote from another famous (Indian) leader (India) named Gandhi.
Goes something like this;

"When the people lead, the leaders will follow"

While I sympathize (and have experienced the same as you point out regarding hunting), I do also believe it is up to ALL of us, as individuals, to stand up for what we believe. And if our leaders WON’T lead, or take direction, then the only obvious thing to do is replace them. Not necessarily easy, but simple nevertheless.

We got no leaders. The last time I went to a meeting they the board members or what ever, they told the members to get Metis Tags for carbou hunting its your right to hunt. The two board members sitting there at the meeting. Two of them went and BROUGHT there Caribou Tags from the Provincial Government, when ask why they said they didn;t want to lose their guns,ski-doos or trucks.Do you call that LEADERSHIP,when they only want the little people to go out in front.Isn’t THEY suppose to lead US.

Of course, Mac is right that the Labrador Metis will not disappear as much as some of the ’powers-that-be’ would like that to happen.
Could be that the organization that is supposed to be defending and furthering the aims of the people will have its challenges and might struggle from time to time. That is nothing new for any organization, any government. I am not here (at this moment) to defend, or decry, what the current positions, or present focus of the organization might be at present.
It needs to be noted that when each person applies for, and in fact signs their membership application they pledge to uphold and further the aims of that organization. How many people do that? I’ll bet there were more people showed up last summer to get a fishing license than there were people at the last (or any) community meeting this year (probably any year) so far.
As far as aboriginal hunting (caribou, or other), or fishing rights; The highest laws of the land recognize who the Aboriginals are in this country. The highest courts have recognized via cases such as Powley, Sparrow and others your right to reasonably and responsibly carry out harvesting activities. Those rights, as all rights, carry serious responsibilities to care for the land and all the creatures on it. Only conservation is higher on the priority list than Aboriginal hunting/fishing/gathering rights - according to the court(s).
If the organizations who are supposed to represent the People are not doing it to our liking, it is also our responsibility to bring them in line with what the people want. The only way to do that is to be involved, to attend meetings when we can (If Bingo or a movie is more important, that’s fine, just remember it’s always Your Choice). We can write our leaders, call or visit local representatives. We can get involved in elections, and we can all make a difference in supporting the candidate who most represents what we believe, and opposing those we don’t. We have to attend those meetings where those all important ’resolutions’ are being presented. We have to throw out those that we perceive to be bad policy. We need to support those that we perceive to be good.
I don’t think anyone should believe that things have to be handed out on a platter. If we don’t take part when we’re given the opportunity, I’m not so sure where we can complain afterwards.
If we are dissatisfied, then that is always the driving force to make change.
Doing nothing seems to indicate satisfaction, does it not?
Just a few General observations and not intended to be in support of, or opposition to anyone else’s viewpoint(s) Lp

Long before explorers set foot on this continent our ancestors had to depend on life skills to provide for the family and put food on the table and I am not willing to sit back and let anyone from the great Northern Peninsula or any other peninsula stand over me with a whip and force me to abide in a play Labrador and buy tickets to win food to put on my table. Imitation is fake, artificial but I am not complaining because nobody said I have to get married and imitate other married people anyhow and as far as that goes nobody said I have to get married period. Its better to be single than married and playing single anyhow.

to ’to mac’
No. As most have already said, you are born a Metis, the ’card’ is to validate your identity in the eyes of those administering programs for YOUR benefit.
The only ones who can cause it to be ’over’ for the Metis people are the Metis people themselves. Every day there will be struggles, particularly caused by outside forces, these who wish the Metis Nation defunct, particularly the provincial government, they have the least to gain from the Metis movement. Every trick ever used by oppressors since time began will be tried and every weakness ever perceived will be exploited. These struggles are also of very personal nature. If you have doubts, then you will internalize your struggle and feelings such as depression will hinder you from moving forward.
A favorite and simple ply is to devide and conquer. You must recognize this and contrive to do battle with it.
But to do battle, you must be prepared...Educate yourself, your children, become knowledgeable, believe in yourself, and unify. There will be many trials and with every trial comes knowledge and strength. If the prize is worth fighting for it will be won. I have no doubts. The Metis Nation is here to stay.

got no time of the day for the Metis Nation, like some people, got ripped off by them a few years ago when they promised to fund me to go to college, had everything all good to go, got accepted and all that bull, went to Goose, like they told me too, too "wait for a call" I waited & I waited & I waited & 3 weeks later I still never had a call, so I goes up to the Labrador Metis Nation and demands to talk to this person who promsied me all this good stuff, but he says, "sorry we ran out of funding" like he could of tole me that before I even bothered to try. So I never re-newed my card either & got no intention on doing so ;)

Mac what do you think is going to happen to the LMN? Do you think it’s all going to be over in a few years for the Metis people?

9262. Wondering - 2010-02-03 16:19:10
Is it true if you are a card holding METIS living outside Labrador, you do not have the right to vote in the upcoming election?

Danny’s government had nothing to do with building the road, only that Danny gets to cut the ribbon (if he ever comes back.)

I am not going to grovel and thank Danny Williams for something he had nothing to do with. He and his water street buddies never wanted a road in Labrador anyway.
