The Goals development at Raynes Park looks like a supermarket car park ! It is totally inappropriate for this peaceful green space near the heart of Morden. Why is there any need for another expensive floodlit football centre when there is one a mile away ?
Merton Council seems to be determined purely to generate as much cash as possible from the park, ignoring the concrens of residents.

There are more than enough football pitches in the area already. If the council are really interested in providing sports facilities then they should restore the dilapidated tennis courts at the Hillcross entrance to the park.

Enquiry; Whats the latest on the planning application?
There does not seem to be any up-dates on the web site?
Have the objectors any alternatives plans for the use of this valuable recreation park that at present is an eye sore and badly needs attention

This was a nice safe residential area parking is now a huge issue as the mosque does encroach on the local residents and so will the football company. The noise will be continous until way past 11 which will disturb and irritate local residents . Theres a common, a park and most people have gardens go kick balls at home and we dont need morden park being converted for the profits of merton council.

Replying to Steve below..

I didn’t know about the proposal you mention. I’ve had a look at the Fields In Trust website and it looks like this is exactly what the park needs.

The field does need investment; I don’t think anyone would argue that. The tennis courts and cricket nets are on their last legs.
If the Fields In Trust people can help protect it against development, stop it from being sold off and also improve the facilities it looks perfect.

I’ve got nothing to do with this website so it’s just my opinion but it gets the thumbs up from me.

I understand AFC Wimbledon (a local semi-professional football club) submitted joint proposals with ’Fields in Trust’ Website here; www.fieldsintrust.org/ to Merton Council to acquire the land. I think they wanted to build facilities for football training but also to safeguard the future of the park as a community area. To gage opinion here would that be a more popular idea than GOALS?

I can almost understand why the councillors want a goals here. It’s somewhere to go after work for a kick-about, better than a dark park, and there’ll be a bar for a few pints afterwards.

I would probably use it for the same reasons, that is what a ’goals’ is for but a park has many, many more uses.
I take my kids to this part of the park in the summer to kick a ball around. I wouldn’t pay for them to have an allocated timeslot on astroturf.
I jog around this field as it’s the only flat part of the park (anyone who’s tackled the hills on the other side knows how hard it is!)

By selling this off for a few pounds now you’re guaranteeing that in 10, 20, 50 or 100 years time it will always be developed and never be a park again.
What’s wrong with it just being a park anyway??

I would like to respond to Nathaniel Simpson. I would like to assure you that there are no plans to remove the Mound and alter this part of Morden Park. As stated the facilities will be located a long way from the Mound, the listed buildings, of St Lawrence’s Church, and Morden Park House. It will be located by the railway bridge on the A24. Right opposite South Morden Station.

This part of the park was used as a sports ground since the 1950’s, and fell into neglect under the last administration. It is proposed to bring it back into use by community groups and schools in Merton. An aspiration that I hope you would applaud

Lighting, is very low level. It is on very low columns. Much lower than the street columns on the A24. I will have down facing luminairs. A Dark Sky System. Not all the facilities will be illuminated.

The facilities will also include mini hockey, mini rugby, kwik-cricket. The existing tennis courts will be refurbished to provide tennis, basketball and netball.

There is no short term profit for the council. There is a long term advantage for the community. There are 40,700 children aged 0-17 in Merton. 60% of available time will be given over to free use. Again an aspiration that I hope you would applaud.

You undoubtedly will know Merton has recently won two "Green Flag" awards for our parks. Our ambition is for more "Green Flags". Quality and environmental issues are foremost in our minds. We have invested over £500,000 in leisure facilities since taking office, much of this essential work carried over from the last administration. We most certainly encourage people to "get out and enjoy exercise". This year our "Over 50s celebration" events attracted record numbers of walkers to our parks and open spaces. I sincerely hope the whole of the 147 acres, which includes the 17.6 acres of this rejuvenated sports field will be enjoyed in a sustainable way for ever.

Cllr Maurice Groves

Totally inappropriate for this quiet residential area.

21. Nathaniel Simpson - 2008-10-30 16:29:24
I have loads of great memories of exploring the Mound and Playing in the park as a child. It provides a free open space that allows people to get out and enjoy exercise. A couple of 5-aside and 1 full size pitch would possibly be of benefit but the scale of this is ridicules. Why would you sell up when land values are on the slide an people need free opportunities of recreation.

The council need to think about the long benefits not the short term profit.
