Hi,

Lovely site and the history is fascinating. I had a chance to visit a few years ago, and wished I had arranged to tour the inside. The grounds are lovely.

I am writing hoping that members of the congregation might recognize these families.

The headstone for Thomas Simonton and his wife Mary Ann are in your cemetary. He died May 25, 1894 and she died Sep 19, 1896. It was erected by their daughter Lillian Elizabeth who married Archibald Dougan on March 28, 1880, in your church. They lived in Derrylard.

Other children we know of are;

Spence Simonton m. Elizabeth Lappan
Moses m. Elizabeth McConville
George m. Elizabeth Allen
Deborah Ann m. Thomas Pentland, Derrykeevan
Margaret Jane m. David Neil
Robert George
Thomas George (James) m. Annabelle Caddell
Robert
William John
Elizabeth

Most of these marriages took place in your church.

I am hoping that members may recognize some of these families, or be related to the Simontons.

We had a relative Mamie visit some of the Simonton relatives in the 1960s. From her travel journal is the following...
Per Mamie’s bible, Thomas Symington could make baskets, furniture or repair anything. The grandmother was a good seamstress at one time, a school teacher.
Thomas had a pain in his back and could not work for 1 1/2 years. A wee woman came 2 1/2 feet tall to the door and asked for a drink of water. He said he would get it for her but he couldn’t walk. She told him to make a poltice and he would be alright. He followed her directions and got all right. She laughed and laughed he would be ok. No one saw her come or go. later they decided she was a fairy.

The house was down by 1960 . The family is buried at Milltown, in the church graveyard. A cousin is May Martin. Other relatives include Sarah, Ethel and Teresa Symington, Jim and Sophie Symington. Jim died December 30, 1957.
From Mamie’s diary "Got up ready to go to church this A.M. Mrs. M. says we are going in to see the Old Symington home where Moses’ mother Deborah Ann, were reared. The house sat on a hill all green and beautiful with hedges around. The house is down now but I saw the road up to it. And the family is buried at Milltown. Mrs. M. says you don’t want to go out there you know they aren’t there now - We hope, you now, they are above. "

Per research done by Michael Anderson from Poyntz Pass, Armagh, 11/26/2006
"Their home was listed as Farm No. 47 in the townland of Derrylard, Armagh, N. Ireland. It was a duplex, common in those times, or more correctly one home converted into two. It consisted of a house, farm buildings and 3a 2r 20 p of land.

If anyone knows of these folks, I’d be most interested in hearing from them.

Thank you,
Roxanna Pentland

I came back from Ireland after looking around the gravestones at Milltown to check for William Tomlinson, et. al.; they must be buried at Tartaraghan, but who knows?

Loved the visit from Massachusetts, U.S.A., and the walk around anyway; where my grandfather was baptized.

He showed up on the 1901 census in Portadown on Obin Street with his parents and siblings having been born in Derrincaw, and then onto Manchester, Hartford County, Connecticut, U.S.A. in 1903 where the older children went previously to check out the cousins claims of weaving jobs at the Cheney Silk Mills there.

All of you have such rich history to be proud of even if it’s gone to other places.

Thank you for your web site.

Robin Parker, son of Samuel Tomlinson, son of George Tomlinson, son of William Tomlinson.
