i have just discovered this disorder and before had no idea. i am certain that my 4 year old daughter suffers with this, she started school this september (2011) and doesnt speak at school or to other family members, just me and her dad, i have arranged a meeting with her teacher tomorrow,and booked an appointment with her doctor the day after. i dont really know where to go after that, but i am so pleased that i have discovered, finily the reason behind my little princesses exsessive shyness  |

| Hi im becky, ive had SM since I was 3yrs old and now im 29. It wasnt until I had CBT four years ago that I learnt to use the phone and speak in a sentence rather than just yes or no in public but even that was a struggle. It was really hard work but after 2yrs and support. I can now just about manage to speak a little bit to strangers. I still find new situations really hard and get angry with myself that I cant speak because people dont understand and just think im rude or dont like them. It has had a major impact on my life as I only have a couple or friends and find college really difficult. I wish there was more information and knowledge about the problem. Im so pleased that im not the only one who has SM, growing up with it untreated has led to other problems and hope that people are now able to get a diagnosis. I also have a physical disability which makes social situations harder. becky |
