| Hi im becky, ive had SM since I was 3yrs old and now im 29. It wasnt until I had CBT four years ago that I learnt to use the phone and speak in a sentence rather than just yes or no in public but even that was a struggle. It was really hard work but after 2yrs and support. I can now just about manage to speak a little bit to strangers. I still find new situations really hard and get angry with myself that I cant speak because people dont understand and just think im rude or dont like them. It has had a major impact on my life as I only have a couple or friends and find college really difficult. I wish there was more information and knowledge about the problem. Im so pleased that im not the only one who has SM, growing up with it untreated has led to other problems and hope that people are now able to get a diagnosis. I also have a physical disability which makes social situations harder. becky |

| My son is 15yrs old and has selective mutism,he was diagnosed by the time he was in 1st grade.We thought he was fine since he talked at home,wasnt until his teacher told us that he would never talk to her or classmates.We saw a research being done by the University on SM and thats when we got the diagnose,back then very few even heard or knew what SM was.I now live in another state and small town and nobody has ever heard of it.The schools have been great though and have done research on it and ordered training dvd for SM for his teachers to learn how to deal with it.It breaks my heart to see he struggles so with this.If there is anyone with this that would like to talk to him through email,to let him know hes not alone...maybe this would help him.I do have him seeing a counsler to help him with coping with the anxiety.I wish there was more awarness for SM. |
