Turkey time!
I wasn’t a fan of Efes, the previous Turkish restaurant at this location. I really wanted to like it, it was ok, but nothing blew me away.
Topkapi blew me away.
Have been here once, mid-week early Jan 2010. The downthread reviews were encouraging and I like turkish food so i was predisposed but even so Topkapi exceeded my expectations.
It’s a nice looking place. Low lighting, white tablecloths, high candles and flowers at the tables, and those little blue avert-the-evil-eye thingies all over.
Service was completely pleasant. The one waitress was managing 3-4 tables and she kept water full, checked in, got rid of empties in good time and smiled throughout.
I was in a it of a rush so rather than peruse the good sized menu i explained that it was my first time there and hit me with what the kitchen does best. And they did.
I won’t rememember the name of the dish but it involved grilled lamb and beef and veg over an eggplant and yoghurt (i think) puree with some crunchy crouton things and a big basket of warm thick flatbread. And it just rocked. Perfectly grilled, delicious flavours, not fat or gristle on the meat, veg not overdone.
Totally yummy backlava and thick turkish coffee for dessert finished the job nicely.
Pricewise in line with the rest of Preston - expect $35-45pp including an app, a main and a drink. Totally worth it.
Will be back. Will send others. |

“Great fresh food and a waitress with white gloves!”
A friend of mine stopped by on a Tuesday night, which is a pretty dead night in Ottawa. The waitress asked if we had a reservation and how many we were. We got the last table by the door as they were almost fully booked! In Ottawa!! On a Tuesday night!!!
The same friendly waitress was very patient with our multiple questions and couldn’t recommend anything in particular as everything was said to be equally good. I wasn’t sure if that was good news or bad so we more or less guessed at a few things.
The food was great, overall. My friend used the word "delicate" at one point and all I could think of was "very, very tasty" when eating my main course (Sorry-we’re engineers, not foodies.) The shiskabob dish had everything taken off the skewer (yeah!) and presented with a bit of a "modern" style. The waitress wore white gloves whenever serving food, which I hadn’t seen for a very long time--anywhere.
My friend’s chocolate desert took a little time to arrive because it took a while to bake it in the oven; wow, that doesn’t happen often. The delay seemed short and well worth having something fresh and hot.
I thought the appetizer was the weakest part of my meal but still quite acceptable. It was hot and tasty but seemed a bit "routine", almost like a good egg roll. My baklava was much more worthy of note-the best I can remember having.
With the discount coupon from their website, and two times (beer+appetizer+main course+desert+coffee) plus tip, the bill came to $95. We’ll be going back for sure.
Don’t judge the restaurant by the website--the pictures don’t do the food or service justice. In fact, the pictures seem pretty amateurish to be brutally honest.

Thank you for the wonderful dining experience that I had at your restaurant on Tuesday evening. When I entered the restaurant, I immediately loved the décor and music. I sampled several different mezes which were all very tasty and immediately reminded me of some of the complex flavours that I tasted when I lived in Istanbul for a few years. I even placed additional orders, so that I could eat your food the next day for lunch. Finally, my server was friendly and very efficient. She made me feel very welcome and comfortable - a consummate host! All of these experiences show how much effort you have put into making the dining experience at Topkapi so warm and memorable. Thank you.

| I would like to extend my compliment to the chef for a great dinner arrangement and for a terrific evening last night. The food was just cook to the perfection and the taste…soooo good! Thanks for suggesting the Kenafe as dessert, it was really good but still think your baklava is the best I ever had in Ottawa. We will be back soon and Happy Holidays to all of you! |

| Our group of seven had dinner Oct 9th. The service was polite but VERY slow. Over one hour to get the first food. Half the dishes were bland and barely edible. Who was preparing the meals? Even trying to leave was nuts. Over 45 minutes to get the bill and pay. A tremendous disappointment given the "reputation" of your restaurant. |
