A historian and Russophile. Living in Alaska, I can appreciate your experience with the weather. Love your descriptions and writing. Look forward to visiting Chitna someday. Thank you for this great journey. You should be proud. Many dont have the stones to do what you did. Keep writing!

Just caught up on your updates - we must’ve been in Chita at the same time!

Thank god we didn’t have the same flight problems as you although the journey itself isn’t fun with a two year old.

Nice Buryat tradition of giving a child money the first time they see him but never got the chance to take him on a tour of Buryat towns (I reckon that’s a nice little earner!)

Posted some Chita piccies on picasa;

Just finished reading your story, I found it very interesting and entertaining,I too like you have had some fun here in russia. I have lived in kirov now for 3 years with my russian girlfriend and really like it here despite all the problems.

Thanks for posting your experiences. I thoroughly enjoyed your writing. It provided a welcome respite to the monotony of work...

Thanks so much for putting this on the net! I really enjoyed reading it. I’ve spent some time over the past few years studying in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and would love to make it out to Siberia at some point to experience Russia with less of the Westernization that has taken hold in those two cities. It really makes me want to go back. Thanks again.

I read your book having come across your reference to it on a message board.
A wonderful read and a great help for insight regarding life in Russia
I spend most of my free time in Russia (Sakhalin Island).

Hi James, liked what I read. It reminded me of time I’ve spent in Siberia. You actually make Chita sound interesting. I only really know it from meeting a couple of travelling salesmen once, and Khodorkovsky, of course. And, yeah, I’m surprised there’s so many foreigners there too. I, myself, lived in Krasnoyarsk for a couple of years, and have been back since. You may be interested to know Jason, the American monk, is apparently married to a local and living in Divnogorsk, near Krasnoyarsk. (Look at the dam on the 10 rouble note.)

I love your writing, stumbled across this while looking up details for my own travel, having done the standard rail journey across Russia and Mongolia I’m going back to spend a decent amount of time exploring. Have spent the last half an hour thoroughly enjoying reading your tales, looking forward to reading the rest!

Ello yoof - the biggest question is, did you eat any onions whilst over there?

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the message. I’m glad to have helped a little. I used to live in Summit County, Colorado, so not too far from you!

All the best for the future and I hope all works out well for your child.

Cheers

James
