Jim....I got into a google books site about Working Class holiday camps. They write about a co-op bakery society camp called Roseland overlooking Rothesay Bay, established in 1911 and closed down in 1974.....initially the accomodations were bell tents, with upgrades to Chalets after the first world war.....it’s an interesting read.....Donny books.google.com/
search for....."working-class organisations and popular tourism, 1840-1970"
book written by Susan Barton,,,,go to page154 |

| Hi Donny, John MC..yes, John Mullens radio shop was accross from the store butchers in the Vennel.Tony Joyce lived up the close in between Mullens & the fruit shop.(now living in Newzealand )I do remember a new shop, new to me anyway, it opened on the same side as the Burgh Hall. I’d say it opened there when the Vennel was pulled down. Oh Donny, I was always going to mention Yankee Macs, you know he was a nice man, his lady helper lived in Silverton, her name was Teenie Mc Callum ..Anne C. Do you remember Yankee Macs ?he was there when you lived in the Vennel I think the next shop down towards the Cross would be auld Russells shop..great memories...Jim ; I hope you find someone who knows more on that Co-op holiday trip I’ve a feeling there’s a couple of your readers here who just might know more,or have heard their parents talking about it. Regards Theresa .. |

Hi Theresa,
Yes - the gentleman was born it Alexandria in 1928, so was nine years of age when he and the family went to Canada Hill for their holiday. I’ve tried various sources on the web but can’t find any info and was hoping (it’s a long shot, I appreciate) that someone might be able to provide some more information - perhaps passed on from their parents? All the best, Jim |

Theresa....
You’re right, there was an "electrical" shop on the west side of the vennel, opposite Yankee Mags, I can still see the display of Naturist magazines just inside Yankee Mags doorway, and, trying to get a fly "keek" at the covers on the way by, before the owner would chase you away.......I’m not certain what the name of the electrical shop was, but that’s where I took the accumulaters for recharge, boy they sure were heavy to cart from Meadowbank St for a wee lad desperate to get them back in time for Valentine Dahl? the Man in Black....Saturday Night Theatre.......I do remember my trips though to Mullen’s in Church Street....Donny |

| Hi Jim, that guy who remembers the camp,? I don’t think there would be many around nowadays who remembers, parents anyway, I was born in 1937 so I take it you are talking about WW2 ? lAWRENCE, #2058 you say that the Waverly bar was near Mullens radio shop ? last I remember, the Waverly was & still is, over the old bridge on the block opposite the Old Denny Club. I beleive John Mullens Radio shop was originally in the old Vennel & maybe moved onto Church St.not too sure on that because the old Vennel was pulled down after I left the town.. TTFN.. |

A request for info please - I was talking to a gentleman from the Vale who remembers, in 1937, the family going on holiday to an unemployed workers camp based in Canada Hill on the Isle of Bute. Apparently it was organised by the Co-op and there was a field of tents where families could have a week’s holiday at very reasonable rates. Does anyone remember these camps? Hope you can help.
Regards, Jim |

| I agree Lawrence - when it’s time for the next generation to look back on their favourite shops what will they remember - the best aisle in the local supermarket? "Ah, aisle 17 used to be great, all sorts of books and stationery." It’s a shame, really - and happening all over the country. |
