I was bored today at work (actually putting things off until my staff comes back from vacation tomorrow) and thought I owuld check out the Class of 72 website. Always fun.
Since class reunion in 2007. The insurance agency expanded in 2008 and we now have 4 offices, Atlantic, Griswold, Red Oak and Shenandoah. We are now United Group Insurance instead of Cass County Insurance. went from 9 employees to 20 employees. Big step for us.
Dad passed away in Feb 2009. Arlene and I were able to buy the farm from my brother and sister so we are back owning the farm on the north side of Corning. I get down weekly to check it out and we go down at least once a month just to hang out. I still hang onto my Corning roots and really enjoy seeing old friends and meeting new ones.
2009 also bought the birth of oour Grandson Stephen in Racine WI. Daughter Angie and husband Matt. Son Jake and Emily are still in Cedar Falls.
At last writing Arlene was taking classes to become a licensed minister. She has now fullfilled that goal and has been licensed by the Disciples of Christ. Now to see what God has in store for us.
Life is still busy. We have been blessed so richly it is hard to believe. |

Hey! Look for classmates from CHS Class of 72 on FACEBOOK! There are several of us hanging out over there now. Also, I wanted to tell everyone that we will be moving from Lincoln, NE to Grand Haven, MI sometime in September 2009.

It is nice to be closer to Corning and the farm. Hope to visit with more of you soon.

Tom & I married in Bozeman, Montana in 1975 while both working with the N.F.O. For the last 25 years we have lived in Spokane, Washington, a familiar place for Tom since he attended college and played basketball for Gonzaga University - and yes he is a Gonzaga Men’s BB addict. We have had our own biological fertilizer business for 27 years. I also had the opportunity to work for the United States Coast Guard Recruiting Office in Spokane for 4 years.
We have 2 daughters. Nicole, 29, is married to Beau Baldwin. She has a degree in Journalism and is also a certified hypnotherapist. They recently moved to Ellensburg, WA where Beau is in his first year as Head Football Coach at his alma mater, Central Washington University. (Previously he was the Offensive Coordinator for EWU - when they lost to the University of Northern Iowa in the 2005 Play-offs.) We are blessed to have two granddaughters. Mia is almost 3, and Macie will be 1 on Thanksgiving Day.
Our youngest daughter, Jenae, is 23 and in July completed 4 years in the Air Force as an Airborne Arabic Linguist. She had 2 years of schooling at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA (loved visiting her there!) The last 2 years she was stationed at Offutt AFB in Omaha, deploying to England, Crete and Al Udeid AFB in the Middle East. Now that Jenae is out of the USAF, she has relocated to Seattle (with her Great Dane, Murphy) where she ideally would like to attend the University of Washington.
The last two years coming back to the Midwest numerous times to visit Jenae and Mom allowed me to catch up with CHS friends. I enjoyed seeing so many classmates at our 30th Class Reunion that I hope it’s a repeat!

I was really looking forward to seeing everyone in a couple of weeks, but I have already committed myself that weekend, working the Chiefs-Vikings game on Sunday for the FOX Sports Network.
Well, I’ve aged five years since the last reunion, something I,m sure others haven’t done. My oldest daughter, Gina, has given us two more grandchildren… She now has four. My son, Jeremy, is married and employed as a design engineer with PeterBilt Trucks in Denton, Texas. My baby girl, Heidi, is a senior at the University of Kansas, majoring in Biology & Math, and hoping to get into Medical School next fall. My wife, Denise, continues to teach English as a Second Language at Donnelly College.
As for me… well, I’m still playing/working at KCPT as a videotape engineer. And for the past eighteen years, I’ve freelanced with ABC, CBS, FOX, and the NFL Network, working Field Audio at Chiefs football games. I also work a couple of college basketball games, running camera and/or setup for CBS, usually at KU, in February or March. The rest of the time, Denise and I stay busy with church activities and attending our grandkids’ sports and scouting events. I’ve even been known to baby-sit our grandkids on occasion.
Now that we are “empty nesters”, Denise and I are looking forward to retirement in the near future. In spite of diabetes that I control with diet and exercise, we are both in remarkably good shape, so we’re looking forward to fun years ahead, traveling and working with friends for “Habitat for Humanity” and other worthwhile causes.
In the meantime, I do wish for a good time for all who are able to be at our class reunion, as well as their safe travel to and from there.

1972-1976
My first years as a returnee, once I survived the shock of going back to my previous life, were quite fun. I can’t forget how good it was travelling with friends around Europe.
1976-1988
This period of life was something like following a script I didn’t write. Finish college, getting a degree, engagement, get a job, getting married…divorce. To tell the truth I can’t complain, since I also had a good life. The time spent as an MD in the Navy, for my military service, was very nice.
1988-1998
This was a time of spiritual research which allowed me to (re)build my inner life after divorcing. A lot of travelling around and contacts. If you get a chance to know it first-hand, monastic life can be quite fascinating. Anyway I never tried it, just visiting.
1993-2001
This period is my favourite in terms of research activities and professional life was rich. I got the opportunity to meet a number of famous cardiologists from US and Europe. Even if the salary was not adequate, as well as my career growth, I was culturally satisfied. At the same time, as a single, I could enjoy lot of holiday travelling. Paris was my N°1 destination (even 3 times a year!). In 2001 I also started my activity as a Workers Union rep in my company (which obviously didn’t help my career and may explain what happened later), activity that still keeps me busy also at a national level and you can see a couple of recent photos.
2001-2003
In terms of professional life this is the end of the Gold Age. Unemployment, although with the parachute of half the salary knocks you out for a while. Let’s put it this way; you have lot of time but little money. In the end though I had a fantastic life experience. I could spend time on my hobbies, like learning Biblical Hebrew (no kidding) and Jewish literature. By the way you can see a couple of photos of myself with two of my favourite writers; Chaim Potok (I met him near Philadelphia) and Abraham Yehoshua (I met him in Florence together with my Hebrew class-mates). I didn’t succeed in learning much of it, but it made me enter a different world, where I met Mieke (her father is Belgian-flamish). I married her in May 2004, 11 days after the birth of our daughter Noa Clara. Her first name comes after the Israeli singer and the second, which is not used, from her catholic baptism; in absence of a Saint Noa we opted for Santa Chiara.
This is it. My life now reflects more what most of you experienced some time ago; snappers, toys, stroller, kindergarten, etc. The difference is that I now am 53 (but my wife is much younger). No more travelling so far. Rare movie shows. But it’s great to be a dad.
Mieke and I regret we couldn’t join you this time, also because we are negotiating to buy the apartment where we live. I am sure you understand and you will still invite us next time.
We wish all of you all the best. Go big red!
Guido

We still live in Cedar Rapids, Susan and I still have 3 kids. Our eldest, Kelly, married last summer (Tom Nolan and Randy Bickford and spouses were kind enough to attend). Kelly is a teacher (First Grade) in the Milwaukee area, her husband, Chad, is a Sr. IT Project Mgr. (“twirley”) for Miller Brewery. Our son Casey is going to school in Iowa City and our caboose, Kathleen, is a Jr. at Washington HS here in CR. No grandchildren on the horizon either. Susan is a Dietitian at St Lukes hospital and I am still selling real estate at Cedar Memorial Cemetery Park. One of our companies, The Cremation Society of Eastern-Central-Western Iowa, gets me to SW Iowa every now and then (In fact, I’ll be in Lenox, Bedford and Clearfield tomorrow) but usually only for the day and right back I come to CR. That’s when I get to stop in and see my Dad who still lives out on “Hospital Hill.”
Wow, 35 years…. It’s hard to believe that much time has blown by us all. Every now and then I get an email from Donnie or Peppy or Ann O’Dowd, or Tommy Nolan or Randy Bickford and it’s so nice to remember back. The Swains (Frank, Julie (Bill), Mary Pat, Mike (Roberta) and Jim (Sue) took a cruise to Alaska and had a wonderful time. While relaxing it was fun to remember some of the things we did at good old CHS and some of our teachers, coaches and classmates.
If I don’t make it back, please extend a hearty congratulations on my behalf to our classmates of the greatest class ever to come out of CHS. I love to get the Alum news letter and the AC Free Press. What a great place to grow up….it’s a wonder any of us made it though.
I look forward to reading about the Big #35 and hopefully see some pictures. Just take my HS graduation pic, add 40 pounds, lose most of the hair (silver is the color of what is left) and add a cheesy gray/silver mustache and you’ll have … me.
Thanks again and I offer this toast.
“To the best and brightest…the class of ’72. Here’s to you and your families.

| I just spent Jan 9 to March 30 working in Grand Island, NE with the ice storms. I am just working in Urbandale until this disaster closes and I move on to another disaster elsewhere. However, I live in Corning with another classmate; Don Wells. Don and I both work with FEMA, he’s retired from 21 ˝ years in the Army and we’ve been together for over 10 years. |
