The Navy Lark has been my entertainment since it started way back in 1959. Not having English as my Mother tongue, I listened to British comedies like ’The Navy Lark’, Hancock’s Half Hour, Round the Horne etc. My teachers have spent many years trying to get me to talk a proper english, which I do now, but my sense of Humour has been permanently twisted!
I was lucky to get hold of the complete series 1 on CD’s in Australia but it is impossible to get any more episodes of the Navy Lark. Hence if anyone knows of a source of either tapes or CD’s of series 2, 3 and more, I would be forever grateful. In these difficult times, it is esential to balance the gloom and doom with some unadulterated gems of the ward room and quarter master’s store of HMS Troutbridge.

Great Site...I served on the real HMS Troubridge as opposed to TrouTbridge in the 1960’s...Yes there was a warship called HMS Troubridge, but I am pleased to say nothing like the Radio Programme (But come to think about it!!......) Still enjoying the Navy Lark Repeats on BBC Radio 7.. You can see more about the real HMS Troubridge by visiting David Axfords Website

Excellent site, I have only just found it, but from now on I will be a fequent visiter. I am 17 years old and love the Navy Lark, as does my sister. However until now we didn’t realise anyone else shared our enthusiasm. It really is a great show, and we have listened to them so much that we can now quote vast chunks of it by heart, much to the bemusement of our friends, (for instance I keep quoting "people in yorkshire puddings shouldn’t forget it", whenever the conversation gets to something vaguely relevent to it). Every time I go into a shop that might sell the tapes I check to see if a new one has been released, and a couple of days ago I was thrilled to see Navy Lark 14 on the shelf, which I have now listened to at least three times!!! I was wondering whether there was a fan club or anything for the show? If there is could you possibly send me details of it? Thank you.

An excellent site - I really like the cast and characters section. A couple of suggestions; I believe that the captain of the Troutbridge - at least during early Episodes - is Lt Commander Stanton. But he is rarely present on the bridge because he prefers to fish. You might also want to reflect the fact that both Denis Price and Stephen Murray (when he takes over from Price) start out as lieutenants, though Murray does move up to Commander through the series. Your task of cataloguing the cast is not helped by the fact that the BBC have decided to issue the episodes on tape in a mixed (up) order. Good luck all the same.

Excellent. Now we need your help if at all possible. This England has a smaller sister quarterly magazine, Evergreen, which has a regular feature called "On the Air". The Navy Lark is an obvious candidate but I cannot write the piece without suitable pictures. Can you help, even if it is just letting us have a copy of your splendid group photo. Please advise!
Thanks in anticipation.

Nice site, and great to have it back on BBC7, can remember going to the Paris Studios in Lower Regent St when I was ( a lot!) younger to see the programme being recorded, used to be on a Sunday, when with some school mates, always used to get there very early to be first in line, thus ended up at front, went so often we got quite friendly with the cast! what great memories, Alastair Scott Johnson (Producer) and Laurie Wyman (writer) were very nice people too.
Does anyone know if they are still around?

I was born an raised in a Naval family in Portsmouth in the 1950s.My Sunday dinner times consisted of us all sitting round the table, eating and crying with laughter at the Navy Lark on the radio. I never realised how much I missed those days until Ronnie Barker cast off and left us. In the course of surfing around I managed to lay my hands on a DVD with 230 mp3 episodes from 1959 to 1977. Some of them are poor quality recordings, but I’m prepared to put up with that as they bring back such happy memories. I can still see my parents laughing as week after week the crew of Troutbrige went into battle with Commander,(later Captain), Povey. I suppose it helped having two Matelots in the family to explain things to a young sprog. Especially the way Pertwee ran the stores! What I can’t understand is how the BBC can, (A)justify the price they are charging for their CDs and,(B)why they are taking so long to bring out the rest of the shows. Lets face it, the audience for classic comedy is out there, and comedy doesn’t come more classic than the Navy Lark.

Not a bad sight. The Navy Lark is just fantastic. I think htat the prices the BBC charge for there sets are extortionate though. I think my favourate parts of the show are the conversations between Johnson and Pertwee in the stores. Lots of interesting information here.

Picked up two of the NL tapes in London. Very funny - we Colonials often miss out on a great deal of fine British humor by not having such as these generally available.

The site is great full of info, shame that the show hasn’t been re-newed by the BBC. The comedy was clean, clear and enjoyable. My son 13 finds the whole show extreamly enjoyable even so that it is nearly 30 years old. Shame on you BEEB, good clean enjoyable comedy.

It’s marvellous to find all this stuff about The Navy Lark, The Goon Show, and other classic radio comedy! I assume that everyone who visits this site is aware that BBC7 can be picked up on RealAudio or Windows Media by following links from www.bbc.co.uk ...? Well, go and have a listen then!
