Ya think the Chronicle will fold? I see it selling to an owner who will trim the fat and keep it afloat. Having worked for both the Chron and the Ex, I can say with certainty that the Chron has a hugely bloated staff, even after cuts. One of the largest newsrooms anywhere -- and unnecessarily so. Their reporting is not better (and many would say it is rarely as good) as other papers in the Bay Area that operate with much smaller staffs. The Chron has "cut" their newsroom to around 235 people. The Ex newsroom is about 1/10 that size, yet its coverage of city politics is widely considered to be superior to the Chron. Newspapers need to find a way to be more relevant. They can’t break news anymore because of the Internet, so they have to stop expecting us to pay $1 a day for yesterday’s news when we already got it yesterday on TV and on the web for free.

So, Liz, if the Chronicle bites the dust is the Examiner all that is left in SF? Newspaper business looks like it is tough these days. Rocky Mountain News (Denver) is publishing its last edition tomorrow after 150 years.

Hi Liz,

Thanks for setting up this website and keeping us all in touch! I missed the 40th but definitely plan on making it the 45th.

Happily living and working in San Diego.
